Jean Baudrillard

Philosopher and Sociologist

Jean Baudrillard

Jean Baudrillard was a brilliant French philosopher who managed to transform a theory into a veritable intellectual simulacrum. Born in 1929 in the small town of Reims, he began his career as a sociologist, but soon realised that the real was overrated - hence his ‘obsession’ with the hyper-real, the simulacrum and the collapse of the distinction between reality and representation.

A voracious critic of the media, consumerism and even the very idea of truth, he gave us incredible works such as ‘Simulacra and Simulation’, a book that has become compulsory reading for anyone who wants to talk about ‘the Matrix’. He died in 2007, but his legacy lives on as strong as everyday hyperreality.
