Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand was the queen of hardcore individualism. Born in 1905 in Russia, she fled communism and moved to the USA, where she built her career defending capitalism.

The author of The Revolt of Atlas and The Birth of Individualism, she created objectivism, a philosophy that basically says that selfishness is a virtue and that depending on others is the stuff of failure.

Her ideas divided and still divide opinion - loved by entrepreneurs and hated by collectivists, Rand became an icon of the liberal right.

She lived her ideology intensely - but ironically needed government benefits at the end of her life. She died in 1982, but her legacy remains strong, inspiring heated debates and providing arguments for those who want to justify that everyone should fend for themselves.
